Regional Mining Office Presents the Chelenko Geopark Project at ZOIT Meeting

SEREMI de Minería ZOIT Chelenko

Hans Zimmermann Dueñas, Regional Ministerial Secretary of Mining for Aysén (SEREMI de Minería de Aysén), took part in the Tourist Interest Zone (Zona de Interés Turístico, ZOIT) meeting for the Chelenko Territory (Territorio Chelenko), held in Puerto Tranquilo. During the meeting, Felipe Andrade Andrade, professional from the FNDR Program for the Productive Development of Geological Resources, executed by the Regional Mining Secretariat, presented the background and objectives of the Chelenko Geopark Project (Proyecto Geoparque Chelenko).

“What we propose, as the culmination of various programs developed by our office, is to implement the first geopark in the Aysén Region along the shores of General Carrera Lake (Lago General Carrera), considering that of the current geosite inventory—which includes 51 locations—more than half are located here,” stated Hans Zimmermann Dueñas during the meeting.

The meeting was attended by representatives from civil society and the public sector, who expressed enthusiasm and high expectations for this initiative, which seeks to promote sustainable tourism and the dissemination of scientific knowledge.

The Chelenko Geopark Project aims to recognize geologically significant sites and landscapes under the international geopark framework promoted by UNESCO, with the goal of achieving community-based management focused on sustainable development. This designation encourages awareness and understanding of key global challenges such as the sustainable use of natural resources, climate change mitigation, and the reduction of risks associated with natural disasters.
