The Mapuche GLOF (GLOF El Mapuche)

The remnants of the Mapuche GLOF can be found in the midsection of the Leones River and Glacier Valley. This geosite includes the El Mapuche Glacier, the glacier valley itself, and the lobe-shaped debris—all of which are remnants of a GLOF event.

GLOF stands for Glacier Lake Outburst Flood, a sudden release of water from a glacial lake. This phenomenon often occurs when a large mass of rock collapses into a glacial lake, displacing water and triggering a powerful outflow that breaches the natural dam or moraine holding the lake.

As a result, all the material large rocks and lake water surges violently down the valley, reshaping the surrounding landscape.
