GEOSITE
Pampa Guadal Fossils (Fósiles Pampa Guadal)
Did you know that marine fossils can be found in the hills of Puerto Guadal? In the area known as the “Pearl of the Lake,” fossils have been discovered to the southeast. Researchers have identified more than 80 species originating from the Atlantic Ocean—information that has helped reconstruct the environmental conditions of Patagonia’s distant past.
How does a living being become a fossil? How is it possible that these remains of ancient marine life are now found in the mountains?
You can learn more about this fascinating geoheritage in the book “Geosites of the Aysén Region”, a scientific outreach publication developed by the Chelenko Geopark Project, which you can download for free from here.
