Márques Stream Travertine (Travertinos Estero Márques)

The travertines in the Estero Márques sector are located about 1.5 kilometers southwest of Chile Chico.
The word travertines refers to chemically formed sedimentary rocks—specifically, limestones of inorganic origin.

In this case, the travertines of Chile Chico form a surface coating or crust spanning approximately 15 hectares, composed of 99.7% calcite. They are the largest travertine deposits in the Aysén Region.

How do travertines form? Why are they located so close to Chile Chico? Are they fossils?

We look forward to sharing more information about this geosite through the various community activities we will carry out as part of the Chelenko Geopark Project.
