GEOSITE

Fossil Flora in the Former Ligorio Márquez Mine (Paleoflora en la ex mina Ligorio Márquez)

The old Ligorio Márquez coal mine is a highly interesting geosite. Located 42 kilometers south of Chile Chico, it contains fossilized plant remains that allow researchers to study the emergence and migratory history of Nothofagus (southern beech), as well as to infer what the landscape of the Aysén region looked like 60 million years ago.

You can learn more about this geosite in the book “Interactive and Inclusive Routes in Jeinimeni,” available here.
