Diatreme (Diatrema)

This diatreme is located approximately 9 kilometers southwest of the city of Chile Chico, in the Los Burgos stream area. It is the only diatreme-type structure in the General Carrera Province. Diatremes are volcanic structures shaped like funnels below the surface and elliptical when seen from above. They once served as conduits through which lava, rocks, ash, and gases were explosively expelled.
