GEOSITE

Castle Hill (Cerro Castillo)

It is located immediately northwest of the town of Villa Cerro Castillo. It is notable for its diversity of glacial and rock formations. Fossils (such as ammonites) have been found on its summit, showing that millions of years ago, the entire area was under the sea.

How many millions of years ago was Cerro Castillo under the sea? How were the Castillo towers formed?

You can learn more about this interesting geoheritage in the book «Geosites of the Aysén Region,» a scientific outreach material produced by the Chelenko Geopark project, which you can download for free here.
